ICT -Time For Change

If we as teachers share as our underlying tenet that all children can learn and when they do we want them to realize their full potential, we will be motivated to seek innovative ways to encourage student to learn. In this techno-centric age our students are already exposed to technology and are very receptive when it comes to gadgets and games such as the Play Station. Some of them even know how to maneuver through the World Wide Web better than we the teachers. We as teachers therefore need to tap into these interests and channel their receptiveness towards academic achievement. Therefore we need to be knowledgeable about Information Technology (ICT) tools and how they can be effectively used to help us improve students’ interest and competence in their academic pursuits. Yes I know, this is easier said than done.

Some teachers are willing to engage these ICT tools to help improve students’ learning. However, many of us are stuck in our ways and afraid of change – afraid of doing things differently. I think one of the reasons for this reluctance or mental block is that change calls on us to take a deeper/ introspective look into ourselves, our beliefs about education and our practices. This may seem as very personal but if we are to encourage the children who see educations as a ‘dead-end’ or ‘non-profit’ venture, we have to be real. Being real is embracing change and making it our own. Come on teachers let’s try to use ICT tools to show kids profit maximization through education.
